As the kingdoms of the Northwest recover from a devastating war, Kelyn of Ilswythe is trying to put his life back in order. Adjusting to peacetime and life at home with a new wife and son is difficult enough, but he soon learns that all is not as idyllic as it appears. He receives troubling news of children disappearing, of dwarves locked in frenzied war against an unnamed foe, of travelers slaughtered by unseen monsters. To Kelyn, these disturbing events appear unrelated, but evidence soon proves that sinister magic is at work.
His twin brother, the avedra Thorn Kingshield, begins to unravel these tangled threads, and finds that the answer comes straight out his nightmares. Lothiar, the enemy he believes to be dead, works from the shadows, training his vast army and scheming among the courts of men in an effort to save his own kind from a tragic, inglorious demise.
Ghosts from a long-forgotten age are rising for revenge, and the Sons of Ilswythe find that their greatest battle is bearing down on them. A monstrous horde is poised to cleanse the lands of Dwinovia of the taint of humanity and avedra alike. The world of flesh and the world of magic must fight side by side if either are to survive.

I got a bit into it and had to go back and reread Blood of the Falcon, it had been too long for me, don't read this one first!I think I liked the first ones better, this whole book felt like an overview and I was really missing some of the depth that I wanted. What happened with the dwarfs in particular, Thorn's attempt to stop everything, and his first attempt at training, while on the run? The first book had better perspective swapping and I think I complained about it not being prompt enough but, it felt better second read though; in this book I missed it. I know it's a long book but I really craved some of those details.
I enjoyed the story, the growth of the characters and the whole plot. Thorn is still my favourite, I like the new romance bits with Carah, and the build up to the next struggle. It was easy to stay engaged with the characters and plot line. I can't wait for the next one.

Sons of the Falcon The Falcons Saga Book 3 eBook Court Ellyn Reviews
Sons of the Falcon takes the reader a generation beyond the story Blood of the Falcon. The tale is set in a detailed world with a cast of characters so vast that it almost forces you to make a scorecard to keep track of them all. (There's a list of the most important ones at the end of the book that I SO wish I had noticed before diving into the story.) If it's been a while since you've read the first book(s), it's worthwhile skimming back through to remind yourselves of everything that happened to Kelyn and Kieryn/Thorn/Dathiel. The animosities and desires built up in the first books still fester, but peace has ruled the lands since the end of the last book. As a new generation comes of age, their personalities affect whether peace will continue as well as events set in motion more than a millenia before.
The Saga of the Falcons is complicated and the author deftly weaves a myriad of strings together into a rich tale of heroism, duty, loyalty, betrayal, and yes, elves, ogres, and magic! The world is rich with history and background, its own religion and peoples with a great deal of thought given even to languages.
If you enjoy epic high fantasy as I do, you will love this intricately detailed epic. It belongs in the same class as Lord of the Rings and the Song of Ice & Fire (a.k.a. Game of Thrones). However, as much as I enjoyed the story, I just couldn't give it 5 stars. Sons of the Falcon takes a very long time to get moving as the next generation grows up to where they can take center stage. Too often characters are introduced solely by name - many of which are similar - with few other clues to their identity that I had to dredge through my memory to remember who they were. Once the story was rolling (more than 100 pages in!), I could not put it down. And then I was horrified (but not surprised) to realize around page 450 that there was no way that the story could end well in just 50 pages, but the next book hasn't been released yet... and naturally, I cannot wait to read it.
I am in my late forties. I discovered The Hobbit when I was eleven. Since then, I have read virtually every well-known fantasy author's work, many of those more than once. So I feel competent to offer opinions on this subject.
The Falcon Saga, put simply, is one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. In my view, it is just as good -- and maybe better, depending on how the third book goes -- as Jordan's Wheel of Time and Martin's A Game of Thrones. I have lost more sleep reading this series than any other. I could not put these books down. And I didn’t want to.
Thank you, Ms. Ellyn, for your brilliant work. I strongly recommend these books to anyone with even a passing interest in this genre.
And I eagerly await the third volume. If it would give her more time to write, I’d be happy to assume responsibility for mowing her lawn and shoveling her walk. In the meantime, I’m going to catch up on lost sleep.
This story continues a few years after the end of the war (book 2), and while it still shows us much of the main two characters (Kieryn and Kelyn) it focuses mostly on Kelyn's children and the heirs of both Kingdoms as they grow up. In the meantime, we start seeing little by little as Lothiar's hateful plans start coming into fruition in it's goal to destroy mankind.
The thing I really liked about this book, is the constant feeling of threat and suspense I felt. Ms Ellyn holds no punches, and if you think that cute and fuzzy little child character is safe because it's a child, you're in for a surprise.
The only bad thing about this book, is that I'm going to have to way another year for the next one.
If it weren't for the poor editing this would be a five star read. Action and adventure, sword and sorcery, with even a dragon thrown in for good measure. The series is worth picking up. Starting the next on in the series...now!
I found myself so glad that there was another book in the series after I finished the first one. This is just as exciting as the first book in the series. The author weaves the lives of all the characters together in such a smooth way that its easy to keep track of all the story lines in the book. It was disappointing to get to the last couple pages of the book and realized that this story was not going to finish in this album, but at the same time, I was very happy to continue on with these wonderful characters in book 3. Unfortunately, its not out yet (due in 2014, sometime). I am eager to get the next book in the series. Will it end there? Good Question!
